  3. Olympics in 1896.  The women's 
  4. event was added in 1948.  The 
  5. shot is a round ball made of iron or 
  6. steel and weighs 16 lbs. for the 
  7. men's event, 8 lbs. for the 
  8. women's.  The shot is pushed from
  9. the shoulder with one hand while 
  10. the thrower remains inside a circle.
  11. The thrower hops backward 
  12. across the circle, rotates 180 
  13. degrees and throws the ball with 
  14. full force.  In the first Olympics, the 
  15. winning throw was under 37'; in 
  16. 1992, the winner threw the shot 
  17. more than 70'.

  20. of Celtic origin, part of the 19th 
  21. century Scottish Highland Games.  
  22. American men dominated the sport 
  23. through the 1960s, losing the Gold

  27. first time since 1968, an American, 
  28. Michael Stulce, won Gold.  The 
  29. women's competition has been 
  30. dominated since its inception by the
